The writer and the plumber

“As I tell my students, what you do, as a writer, is no more elegant than plumbing and makes you no more special than the person who fixes your toilet. And, by the way, the person who fixes your toilet is probably going to make way more money than you will. Because, at the end of the day, when the toilet’s out, guess whose work suddenly feels way more important than yours?”
